"We were constantly assaulted by the Indonesian security forces"
In the aftermath of the occupation over Free Papua Movement (OPM)
headquarters by Indonesia's security forces in Eduda, Paniai, Papua, the
situation has become more tensed. Hundreds of villagers around Eduda
were evacuated.
The situation has worsened following the burning of a house belonging
to Tourism Agency in Enarotali village on Thursday night, Dec 15.A witness said the house owned by an official of the agency was situated in East Paniai District. During the incident, the situation was under control. Security forces and OPM members had just engaged in gunshots. As a result, villagers chose not to leave their homes.
After the flame got bigger, the unknown men fled into the night. The fire was put out by the villagers after the house got completely burnt down.
Paniai police then arrived on the scene and started to pursue the perpetrators.
The burning was alleged as an act of revenge following the attack launched by security forces against OPM’s headquarter in Eduda. Rumor has it that the organization is preparing a more serious action.
Earlier, OPM claimed 14 of its members were killed when its headquarters was attacked by TNI/Polri in Eduda Paniai Papua Mount on Tuesday, Dec 13.
"We were constantly assaulted by the Indonesian security forces. Sporadic attacks were set off. Many people from our side were killed,” said the spokesman of OPM’s Division II Makodam Pemka IV Paniai, Leo Yeimo, Dec 15.
Meanwhile, the spokesman of Papua Police Department, Commissioner Wachyono, claimed that the number of victims from OPM side is not yet unveiled. OPM headquarters was bombarded because the militiamen were showing signs of resistance.
