Only 43 Million Hectares of Virgin Forest Indonesia

A total of 1,000 children love trees enliven the parade activities with the Ministry of Forestry, the city government, and private parties.

On this occasion, Minister of Forestry Zulkifli Hasan said the lack of children on the importance of forests for their lives in the future could lead to the destruction of forests that exist today.

"Do we want Indonesia to be barren as some countries in Africa in the absence of forest that can hold water?" Zulkifli said when opening the Love Parade Festreeval Tree at City Hall page Jakarta, Sunday, November 27, 2011.

Ministry of Forestry data mentioned, besides Sumatra, Borneo forest has a large rate of damage of total deforestation that occurred in Indonesia, amounting to 1.08 million hectares per year.

"Indeed I categorize Indonesia's forests in critical condition, since tens of years as a mainstay for the revenue for the state. Of the 130 million hectares, only 43 million of them who fall into the category of virgin forest," he explained.

According to Zulkifli, the peak forest destruction began to occur around 1999-2002, caused by illegal logging, forest fires, as well as the regional growth.

"Firstly of course because of encroachment of forest area without permission into oil palm plantations, into agriculture, and mining the dark," said Zulkifli. Then, he continued, the second, due to illegal logging, and third because of forest fires associated with the local culture. "Three things here that accelerate forest destruction," said Zulkifli.
